The tornado that touched down Wednesday morning in Montgomery severely damaged the main United States Postal Service facility.

This facility is the link in the postal service chain adjacent to the State Mail Room, which serves all state agencies, including the Alabama Department of Insurance.

Due to the tornado damage, the Department has been advised that incoming mail service will not occur today (Thursday, November 16) and may not occur on Friday, November 17.

Also, there are questions regarding the status of mail in the facility as to whether it has been damaged or destroyed.

Accordingly, all consumer, companies and producers that have mailed items to the Alabama Department of Insurance this week should inquire as to whether the item mailed was received. All should be prepared to mail the item again – or send via email – if it has been has been damaged, lost or destroyed.

The general email address for the Department is insdept@insurance.alabama.gov. The Department’s toll-free telephone number is 800-433-3966.

A subsequent announcement will be made once incoming mail service is restored.
